Sunday Snippets: Relaxing Weekend

My back was acting up most of Saturday so I spent it on the couch, with Cheryl Strayed and The Mummy movies. Which are the best. End of story.

Omg, The kitties! I really am going to end up an old cat lady.

Babies: four legged and two legged Gah, cuteness!

Anti-Racism

Yes, racism looks like hate, but hate is just one manifestation. Privilege is another. Access is another. Ignorance is another. Apathy is another. And so on. So while I agree with people who say no one is born racist, it remains a powerful system that we’re immediately born into. It’s like being born into air: you take it in as soon as you breathe. It’s not a cold that you can get over.

LOL So very true.

And when we frame all women as being someone’s wife, mother or daughter, what are we teaching young girls?

We are teaching them that in order to have the law on their side, they need to be loved by men. That they need to make themselves attractive and appealing to men in order to be worthy of protection. That their lives and their bodily integrity are valueless except for how they relate to the men they know.

Diane J. Humetewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and former U.S. attorney in Arizona, has been nominated to serve on the U.S. District Court for the district of Arizona as a federal judge. If confirmed, she would be the first active member of a Native American reservation, and first Native American woman to serve as a federal judge.

Sunday Snippets: Snow?

I love that we named the storm Hercules.

Beautiful images

Absolutely dead. I loved Power Rangers as a kid. One of my favorite shows as a kid.

Truth, because damn

Beautiful post from Monica at TransGriot

But the cure for those body image issues is pretty much the same. It's getting comfortable in your own skin, understanding that gender identity is between your ears, and confidently projecting and expressing to the world acceptance of your gender identity.

Holy Crap If I were the people on that boat and saw that picture later, I'd never leave my house again.

While #SolidarityIsForTheAbleBodied shined a light on incidents of able-bodied privilege from across the globe, showing how ableism is a systemic issue in all political and societal respects, it also revealed something that has long been known by some, but that has been unrecognized by others: that FEMINISM HAS AN ABLEISM PROBLEM.

Gee, ya think? If you don't have the money, yeah, having a family just doesn't usually happen. I know the feeling.

The 11 Dumbest Things Said About Women In 2013 Let's be honest, god knows there was a lot.

Sunday Snippets: Yes, I do believe it's finally winter edition

So will we get a white Christmas this year?

Sunsets/sunrises are my favorite How beautiful are these pictures? In a similar vein, it took me a second to realize what was being pictured here. How cool are those? Gah, I love this too!

TDOR thoughts from Janet Mock I can't wait to read her book.

Often when I see a trans woman of color in the media, she is being gawked at, misgendered and reduced to victimhood, a sort of martyr we hold up as a voiceless, inactive symbol of our collective oppression and pain, as if that oppression is distributed evenly throughout our communities. I’m struggling to come to grips with this, to find solutions, healing and action.

Truth If I had a dollar for everytime invisible illness weren't taken seriously....

If you’ve been a “normal” size your whole life, you may never have thought of the benefits of being thin. But sizeism is very prevalent, and it’s one of the acceptable “isms” in our society.

Yet again, the justice system failing our citizens.

Back in June 2011 CeCe McDonald and her friends were minding their own business and headed to a nearby Target store in their south Minneapolis neighborhood. As they passed the Schooner Tavern they were subjected to racist and transphobic slurs and a fight instigated by Molly Shannon Flaherty that resulted in the death of neo-Nazi sympathizer Dean Schmitz.

Completely disgusting What. The Fuck.

Logan Beaschler and Collin Warren, both 18, and 19-year-old Joseph Bomgardner, have been charged with misdemeanor hate crime and battery, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Erin West said. The three men, who lived with the 17-year-old victim in a four-bedroom dormitory suite they shared with four other students, allegedly began harassing their black roommate starting at the beginning of the school year in August.

At first, the suspects nicknamed the victim "Three-fifths" and "Fraction," referring to the way the U.S. government once counted a slave as three-fifths of a free person, police said.

LOL Completely how I felt during college.

I would say Fucking Florida, but really this could happen and does everywhere in the country.

This is awesome!

I love this video.

Sparkles! I mean, honestly who doesn't love pictures of sparkles? Or videos of a kitten purring?

I also found some lovely quotes too:

Sunday Snippets: Anniversary Edition

The husband and I are celebrating ten years since our first date this week. In other news, I'll be off to pluck gray hairs. :)

I definitely need this Because ball pits are the best. And this.

This man should not be legally allowed to be this adorable If you aren't watching Sleepy Hollow, I feel sorry for you. See also, Tom Hiddleston.

Love Dooce. That is all. The twitter grabs she find are usually hysterical, but the "dinosaurs are really Jesus horses" killed me completely.

Oh, the feels. I still have my teddy from childhood, who has been repaired countless times. No better feeling than cuddling with an old favorite stuffed animal.

What.The.Fuck No seriously. They are advocating kidnapping now?!?!

I need these hanging on my walls.

Great tips to simplify your life Awesome ideas.

Yes, why can't we do this? Oh, right because there is big money in prisons here.

Ugh. This guy. Dateable my ass.

So sad this is true

Sunday Snippets: Extra Hour of Sleep Edition

I still think the whole fall back/spring forward is a goofy idea, but I'll take that extra hour this weekend.

How cute is this tiny house? I love the idea of using less resources and still getting something stinking cute like that house. Our house is just under 1500 sq feet and I feel like we could go even smaller in our next house.

*dying of laughter* So much truth.

file under things I need

Holy crap, these photos

Sometimes the internet does blow my mind in a good way But it's still a shitty thing to realize

More truth from Lindy West Can also file under Duh, no shit and Of-fucking-course women work, you ass goblins.

Because cats Who doesn't love gifs of cats?

Disgustingly sad that we even *need* this graph.... (slight TW)

YES and more yes See also God bless George Carlin

LOL So true. I love the campyness that is Sleepy Hollow.

MORE YES Instead of this bullshit about buck up, you don't look sick, what do you mean you have anxiety, depression, bipolar, etc? See also, Anxiety

Beautiful essay

All these years later, and he still thinks I can do just about anything. He’s proud of me – he has a queer feminist activist for a daughter, and he’ll talk about it to anyone who will listen. Twenty-one years, my coming out to him as a lesbian, my outspoken activism, my writing and my protesting, and I am still his sweet baby girl. He reminds me often how much he looks forward to walking me down the aisle at my wedding, whenever that will be.

Stand Your Ground MY ASS She was fighting for her life against an abusive partner and how she has been treated is deplorable.

*rolls eyes* Where is my vial of man tears?

These are all deliberate acts with predictable consequences. There is nothing “random” about how we have armed ourselves, and there is nothing “random” about the filigree of high-flown rhetoric with which we justify arming ourselves, and there is nothing “random” about how we learn nothing every time someone who could be anyone decides to exercise his Second Amendment rights by opening fire.

Around the interwebz

So spooky. I wonder if it's true?

This is going to be my cat someday.

Just threw up in my mouth

Yes to all. This is pretty much my plan for January and if I like it (and so far, I am) I plan to continue it.

Hrm. On one hand, I see the ease factor: tell everyone at once. And let's face it, most of us live our lives on Facebook. And hey, who doesn't like sparkly things? But on the other, it's one more issue I have with the wedding industrial complex.

Friday Fun

If you have not checked out the midnight blues, you are missing out:

So beautiful

Sigh...of happiness

If I hadn't already been convinced by my best friend in college that fall was the best season, these two posts would convince me.

In the world of tattoos....

I was told the same thing. Especially since two of my tattoos are on my wrists. I have an awesome job and a freelance career!

Can I just like this x1000000000?

YES! This, this, is what I have been looking for! My family and friends are used to rolling their eyes but ever since I got hitched, I've been genuinely curious, if you couldn't tell.

Why aren't we having more conversations like this? Not just about name changing, but abortion rights, religion, anything and everything? Having a safe and open space to discuss this is a deep gulp of fresh air and I tip my hat to the women who started this. About freaking time.

Articles Round-Up-Extreme Heat Edition

Ah, the summer in Maryland. How I loathe thee. My endo flares really badly when I get too hot and since it's still early June, this summer isn't looking pleasant, temp wise.

Because god forbid we forget about the menz Disgusting

On the Anthony Weiner disaster There is so much I'm pissed about, regarding this issue. There is the fact that he was the one calling the GOP on their bullshit, the fact that he seemed to be making a difference and now no one will ever take him seriously again, as it should be. The fact that he stepped out on his wife, while she is pregnant, the fact that he harassed innocent women, it is all extremely upsetting. He was one of the only reasons I had faith in Congress because it seemed like he wanted to make a difference and that inspired me. Now I realize that he's full of shit, just like the rest of them.

Fuck yeah Even if you are not a parent, great advice.

Of course "As Think Progess notes, Santorum has previously "decried 'the selfishness, the individual self-centeredness' of legislators who were concerned about the health of pregnant women." Santorum, seemingly, has not wavered on his belief that you are less important than a fetus."

In case anyone was actually wondering about the state of our economy...  Pretty sad

Great piece from Liss on consent and Rep Weiner (TW)

Articles Round-Up-Job Edition

I have a second interview for this awesome not-for-profit today and by 4:30, I'll know whether I got the job or not!

Where is Chris Meloni when you need him?  TW for rape & rape apologia. I wish I could have been in NYC for the protest to this. But I'm glad one was organized so quickly and so many people came.

Helping the victims of the tornado disasters  My heart goes out to these people. May they find their loved ones and have help healing from this terrible tragedy.

Can't you tell I'm stunned? If we withhold contraceptives, sliding scale birth control options and abortions, what the hell did people think were going to happen?

Disgusting Transphobia Ew, ew, ew ew

Sadly predictable The ongoing case of Nikki Araguz.

Awful fat hatred (TW)  In case anyone was still under the impression that fat hatred in this country is not explicitly eliminationist, Shaker NobleExperiments sends along this article which reports: "According to South Florida's Sun Sentinel, 15 of 105 OB/GYN practices in the area have created weight limits for new patients starting at 200 pounds."

The new doc, Dark Girls Really powerful stuff.

WHAT.THE.FUCK I wouldn't even know where to begin. Disgustingly racist

In less depressing/racist news, a new E.E. Cummings poem has been found Go check it out.

Articles Round-Up-Working Long Hours Edition

I haven't been posting as often as I'd like because between two jobs, I very rarely have a full day off. But I need to make more of a commitment to this blog.

Filling the Gaps from Feministe Still not sure how I feel about this piece. I get where Jill is coming from, but Feministe has long has problems with transphobia, racism and generally presenting a plethora of view points.

Review of Feminism for Real by the ever awesome Allison McCarthy Can't wait to read it.

Men & Fatherhood from Shakesville

Gag me (TW) In this interview, we learn that men can be abusive, violent assholes. It's science! More specifically, it's the science of hormones! Also, it is the science of half-assed culturally-laden assumptions!

No fucking way  No one can argue, with any honesty or credibility, that they value life if they would force a person to carry to term an unwanted or unviable pregnancy against hir will. That is the opposite of a respect for life, if the definition of "life" is to have any meaning at all.

Offbeat Mama on Mother's Day

I thought I saw spring scampering away somewhere...

Giving a shit loading....

True facts I was so excited when Obama was elected and now I'd just like to be an expat somewhere. There really isn't anything that excites me anymore about DC. Most are a bunch of hypocritical fucks who love nothing more than to see me birthing babies until I die from lack of health care.

The fuckery abounds...(TW for rape, victim blaming)
