Sunday Snippets: It's been a week

Um. So this week. I got food poisoning, bruised myself shoveling snow, my car's hatch dropped on my head and I also gave myself a minor concusssion and dented a table, when I bent down to put my snow boots on.

Which goddess did I royally piss off?

An interesting concept

Horrible

A Moroccan man in France was brutally killed after being stabbed 17 times in front of his wife at his own home by a neighbour in what is described as a “horrible Islamophobic attack”.

Oh, kitties.

Powerful haiku

5 Black Trans Women Who Paved the Way

Well, this baby is hysterical

Horrifying (TW)

The media attention surrounding the Isla Vista shootings was a twofold gift for the group, driving new recruits to the movement and allowing A Voice for Men to present itself as the moderate middle. Some men tried to distance themselves from Rodger with a hashtag, #notallmen. Many more women—a million within days—responded with #yesallwomen, as in, yes, all women have experienced variations of the misogyny that led Rodger to his crimes. The manosphere did not like this. "Men are your benefactors, your protectors, and your providers," a writer at A Voice for Men explained. "So the next time you trend a hashtag about us, maybe you say 'thank you' instead."

“The truth is: Even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women,” Arquette reflected. “And it’s time for all the women in America and all the men that love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we’ve all fought for to fight for us now.”

*rubs eyes* BUh-what?! No, no, no, no. Has she never heard of intersectionality?!

Sunday Snippets: Three Day Weekend

I have a three day weekend courtesy of "Columbus Day." I hate that we can't just call it Racist Fuck Who Murdered People Day. Same damn thing.

Beautiful fall pictures & more

Welp, now I want to go to Norway

OMG adorable

Um, welp. There it is.

THE FUCK

I first read about this three years ago, when the parents filed a class action suit. I couldn’t think about anything else for days. I couldn’t sleep. These scientists deliberately poisoned children. They lured families in with unusually low rents. They monitored the kids’ blood lead levels. And they didn’t do anything to help when those levels climbed and climbed.
YES!

Kinda awesome

Fuzzy things playing....yes

I love tiny fuzzy critters.

Aww, poor thing

Around the Interwebz: Almost My Birthday edition

Birthday is in less than two weeks. Very excited.

Disgraceful

Cause fixing the fucking economy would be too much ask.

Disgusting (TW for racism)

Smaller house

We love having a smaller house. It is much easier to clean and it has more character than these McMansions thrown up in five seconds.

Student Loans

In the shadow of these onerous, misguided policy decisions, we find ourselves facing a student loan burden so enormous that its present value has actually eclipsed our national credit card debt. Incredibly, the fundamental problem is quite simple: Our current system offers no incentives for loan originators to deny risky borrowers; consequently, student loans are much too easy to obtain. Huge amounts of cash are offered to students without regard to the school they might attend or the major they might choose. Colleges and universities happily raise prices (at a rate significantly faster than inflation), secure in the knowledge that larger loans will be provided to cover increasing costs.

I remember every April, checking my own campus mailbox and receiving the "Oh, so sorry, we have to jack up your rates-again" letter. Meanwhile, my payments went to a building I'll never get to use. And the financial office still treated me like a disposable wallet, despite the fact that I was putting myself through school.

Exactly

That song is disgusting.

Amazing read

What? You thought you were one of the “good ones” why because you didn’t burn burn down a black church or wave the Confederate flag. How could you not be one of the good ones, you didn’t do anything? The silence and apathy of most whites is nearly deafening, until you rightfully indict them on their privilege and then they come out in droves demanding to be counted among the “good ones” and the speshul white allies.

Here’s the truth. You’re not one of the good ones. If you have to say you’re about it, you’re not about it. Unless you’re willing to do the right thing at your personal expense, don’t lecture blacks and other POCs about being one of the good ones. Don’t tell us to look for the good in whites.

On Monday, CHICAGO HOUSE cut the ribbon on the TransLife Center (TLC), a first in the nation facility for members of the transgender community, located in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood.

Mmm, autumn

So use it trans people, allies and supporters to dispel the lie that we Black transpeople haven't contributed anything to the advancement of trans human rights, our people's advancement, aren't part of the Black community or made some history in our own right.

Clearly, the state of North Carolina agrees with me, because they’ve just decided that it is now legal to carry guns in bars in their state. And playgrounds!

Around the Interwebz: OMG will the heat ever stop? edition

True Comic

Exactly.

(TW) Can't believe it's been 15 years I remember being in middle school and reading about what had happened. It was and still is fucking atrocious.

Courage in the face of evil and hatred What's even worse is that these images could have been taken present day.

Melissa Harris-Perry speaks about Trayvon Martin

The MSNBC host devoted her show on Sunday to the verdict. "I will never forget... the relief I felt at my 20 week ultrasound when they told me it was a girl," Harris-Perry recalled on Sunday. "And last night, I thought, I live in a country that makes me wish my sons away, wish that they don't exist, because it's not safe."

From the nope, never fucking ever files
More truth

I miss Europe Beautiful images

About that....

#JusticeforTrayvon

I was at a friend's birthday party when I got the news alert email from The Washington Post.

What made me angry at first was that I wasn't surprised. I went to bed numb and angry and I woke up numb and angry.

A beautiful 17 year old son will never get to be with his family again.

And there are more Trayvon's out there. Thousands more.

It's fucking disgusting and unfair and a million more words that fail to live up to how awful this is.

And even these words don't feel enough. Far many people have said it better than I can right now.

The Black Snob

Instead, reach down inside of you, find your outrage button – the one all free people are born with – and fix it. You will not be a broken person out of survival in an unjust world. Do not accept what is given to you, the dead corpses of black boys, because there have always been corpses. Free people don’t accept something just because it was always there. Free people live and react as free people with all the power and indignation their creator bestowed upon them. Don’t let this injustice lead to acceptance or apathy. Don’t let an injust world change you.

Womanist Musings

Slowly this story will slip off the front pages of newspapers and the networks will end their round the clock coverage, moving onto yet another tragedy that they can report on. The coldness of the grave does not bring ratings like sensationalism. The only people who cannot walk away, who cannot forget, are those who knew and loved Trayvon. For them, this will be a never ending nightmare because not only did they not get justice, they cannot get their loved one back.  They don't even have the cold comfort of believing that Trayvon's death will lead to change because this trial has proven soundly that he is just another, in a long list of Black youths, whose lives and deaths are meaningless in a White supremacist world.
